Yin Yoga and the Yamas

  • Live stream & recorded USA (map)

Tuesday evenings 7:30 - 8:45 pm EST. 5 ceu’s available from Yoga Alliance.

Cost: $55

At the beginning of Patanjali’s eight-fold path of yoga lays the Yamas: the moral, ethical and societal guidelines for the practicing yogi. These guidelines are all expressed in the positive, and thus become emphatic descriptions of how a yogi behaves and relates to their world when truly immersed in the unitive state of yoga. While we may not strive to reach such a pure state ourselves, the Yamas are still highly relevant and valued guides to lead a conscious, honest and ethical life.

Patanjali considered the Yamas the great, mighty and universal vows. He instructs us that they should be practiced on all levels (actions, words, and thoughts) and that they are not confined to class, place, time or concept of duty (YS 2.31). The self-awareness you gain by practicing the five yamas can help you transform negative energy and cultivate a deep, abiding sense of peace. Yin yoga postures are primarily about release. They are passive in nature and held anywhere from one to seven minutes to target the body’s connective tissues. This practice focuses on stilling the body for a gentle, sustained sensation. This stillness, combined with learning each week about the Yamas helps focus the mind, and calm the body.

What to have for class: The series is best listened to with headphones to make it more immersive but not necessary. Pillows, blankets, yoga blocks, yoga mat and bolster, if you have them. Oracle cards are pulled for each participant prior to class and shared via text to help with intention.

The cost is $55 for four classes via Zoom. Payable via Venmo. Once payment is received the Zoom link will be sent. If you’d prefer to pay another way, just reach out to me and we can make other arrangements. If you take the yin yoga and meditation class, the cost is only $80. Contact Marie directly to register, 231.206.1133. Each class is recorded and available for at least one week after the ‘live’ class.
